How to Use a Reed Diffuser (and Make It Last)
9 July 2026 · Mark, Muir & Me

To use a reed diffuser, place the reeds in the oil and let them draw the fragrance up into the air. Flip the reeds once a week to refresh the scent, use more reeds for a stronger throw and fewer for a subtle one, and keep the bottle away from heat and direct sunlight. Ours last between eight and twelve months.
How many reeds should I use?
More reeds means a stronger scent; fewer means a softer one. Start with most of the reeds for a larger or draughty room, and hold a few back for a bedroom or bathroom where you want something gentler. You can always add or remove reeds as you go.
How often should I flip the reeds?
Turn the reeds over about once a week. Flipping brings the oil-soaked ends back to the top and refreshes the throw noticeably. Wash your hands afterwards, and avoid dripping oil onto polished or painted surfaces.
Where to place a reed diffuser
- Somewhere the air moves a little, near a doorway or a spot you pass often, so the scent travels.
- Away from radiators, sunny windowsills and heat, which make the oil evaporate too fast.
- On a coaster or tray, to protect the surface beneath from any stray oil.
How long does a reed diffuser last?
Ours last between eight and twelve months. If the scent starts to fade, flip the reeds; if it has faded for good, it is time to replace them or the bottle.
Common questions
Why has my reed diffuser stopped smelling?
Usually the reeds have become saturated. Flip them, or replace them with fresh ones, and the throw will return.
Can I reuse the reeds?
It is best to use fresh reeds with a new bottle, as old reeds clog over time and carry the previous scent.
