A candle for every room

4 September 2026 · Mark, Muir & Me

The quickest way to choose a candle is not by its notes but by its room. A scent that feels right in a busy kitchen can be too sharp beside a bed, and a fragrance made for slow evenings can be lost in a bright hallway. Here is how we think about scenting a home, room by room.

If you would rather choose by feeling than by fragrance, our four moods are a good place to start: Unwind, Restore, Energise and Indulge. You can browse the whole range that way on our shop by mood page.

The living room

This is the room that greets people, so it suits a warm, welcoming scent with a little depth. Something soft and rounded works beautifully here, and a larger candle earns its place in a space you actually sit in. Reach for an Indulge or Restore candle and let it burn while you settle in for the evening.

The kitchen

Kitchens need a scent that feels clean and fresh, and that can hold its own against cooking. Bright, citrus-led and herbaceous fragrances are the ones to trust. A room spray is useful here too, for a quick lift after dinner. We have written more on this in our guide to the best candle scents for the kitchen.

The bedroom

A bedroom asks for calm. Soft, quiet fragrances with musk, gentle florals or a little vanilla help a room feel restful rather than busy. This is Unwind territory. If you like scent at night, it is worth reading how to do it safely first, in can you burn a candle in the bedroom and the best scents for sleep.

The bathroom

A bathroom is the easiest room to turn into something spa-like. Eucalyptus, mint and clean, watery notes suit it well. Wax melts are lovely here, and if you would rather have fragrance without a flame, a reed diffuser keeps a small room gently scented all day.

The hallway

The hallway is the first thing anyone smells when they arrive, and it is often a space you pass through rather than sit in. That makes it perfect for something always-on. A reed diffuser works well, and The Still, our waterless pure oil diffuser, is made exactly for this: no flame, no water, just a fine mist of pure oil whenever you want it.

The home office

Where you work wants a scent that helps you focus rather than unwind. Bright, green and citrus notes are the ones that keep a room feeling awake. This is Energise territory. There is more in our guide to scents for focus and energy.

Layering, and a word on care

You do not have to choose only one thing per room. A candle for the evening and a diffuser for the day is a lovely combination, and scents from the same mood family sit together happily. If you are new to it, our notes on how to layer home fragrance and how to burn a soy candle will help you get the most from each one.

Everything we make is hand-poured by us in Glasgow, in soy wax, and it is all vegan and cruelty free. If you would like a hand choosing, come and see us in store or get in touch.
