What is a waterless diffuser?

A waterless diffuser, sometimes called a nebulising diffuser, scents a room using nothing but fragrance oil. There is no water to dilute it and no heat to alter it, so what you smell is the oil as it was composed. Our own, The Still, is a rechargeable, cordless piece that draws on pure oils and releases them in short, controlled bursts. It runs for up to forty hours on a fill and offers different timer modes, so you can set it to work in short intervals or a longer session. It is the closest thing to opening the bottle and letting the room breathe it in.

Because nothing is added, a waterless diffuser gives the cleanest, most faithful throw of the three. It suits open-plan spaces, hallways and any room you want to scent quickly and properly.

How a reed diffuser works, and how long it lasts

A reed diffuser is the quiet one. Reeds sit in the oil and wick it upward, releasing fragrance into the air with no power and no attention. Ours last between eight and twelve months. More reeds gives a stronger throw; fewer keeps it subtle. Turn the reeds once a week to refresh the scent, and keep the bottle away from heat and direct sunlight.

What an electric diffuser does differently

An electric, or ultrasonic, diffuser mixes a few drops of oil with water and breaks the two into a cool mist. It adds a little humidity to a room and often carries a soft light, which some people love for an evening. The trade is that the water dilutes the fragrance, so the scent is gentler than a waterless diffuser, and the unit needs regular refilling and cleaning.

So which should you choose?
